Blast Protection for Bridges: A Framework for Stochastic Performance Based Blast Design of Bridges

Topic:  This presentation proposes a framework for performance based blast design of bridges as it pertains to a bridge's ability to minimize the potential for undesirable consequences. The performance based design process follows logical progression of steps, starting with the characterization of hazards, continuing through analysis simulations, damage modeling and loss assessment by finding and subsequently balancing functional relationships between design and analysis and consequences. The outcomes of each process are articulated through a series of generalized variables, termed as topology, geometry, damage and hazard intensity measures. A rigorous stochastic framework permits consistent characterization of the inherent uncertainties through the process. The proposed framework is well suited for design process through stochastic characterization of assessment measures. Through stepwise approach, the framework facilitates a system wide approach to various threats by establishing functional relationships between the development of appropriate models, design methods, damage acceptance criteria and tools necessary for implementation. The proposed methodology can be implemented directly for performance assessment, or can be used to as a basis for establishing simpler performance criteria and provisions to achieve resilient structural solutions.

Evaluation and Assessment of Bridges Subject to Fire: Fire Hazard Calculations for Bridges: A Streamlined, Simplified Approach

Topic:  This presentation will examine a streamlined approach for efficient calculation of a bridge’s response to a fire hazard using the aforementioned three-step methodology developed by Hinman Consulting Engineers. The approach synthesizes numerous calculation techniques based on both first principles and empirical data to quantify the extent of damage caused by a specified fire threat. Due to its efficiency, this approach can be used to calculate the effects of a wide range of fire types, sizes, and locations. These results can then be used ultimately to develop an envelope of performance for which the risk of damage and the effectiveness of potential fire protection measures can be evaluated.
