Hinman's work within private sectors include financial institutions, hospitality structures, corporate headquarters and hi-tech manufacturing companies located in high risk areas in the United States and abroad. Our corporate and commercial services include everything from high-level consulting and criteria development, product market research and development through blast mitigation design and construction strategies for new and existing buildings.

Sound design outcomes don’t happen without a comprehensive and integrated approach. Hinman engineers listen to clients to understand needs, risk tolerance and budgetary limitations.

Based on the identified client objectives, Hinman develops physical security criteria consistent with industry standards and best practices to ensure appropriate levels of physical protection.

Hinman uses customizable tools to make rapid cost-benefit comparisons between facilities as well as suggest design solutions. Early on, these tools can be used to determine whether a site, lease space or existing facility would be an appropriate purchase. Later, they can be used to evaluate design options, taking the guesswork out of cost/benefit analyses and reducing implementation costs while offering the real numbers needed to make high-level ROI decisions.

Commercial and corporate services range from quick assessments and advice through full engineering services.

Sub Sectors

Hinman has the experience and expertise to address the challenges of protecting the hospitality industry by seamlessly integrating unobtrusive protection into the architectural aesthetic; balancing an open and welcoming environment with the comfort and safety of visitors.

Protective design consulting is not just about hardening your building. In fact, hardening is the last strategy. Initial protective design strategy first finds the best solution to fit our clients’ budgets and offer risk outcomes they are comfortable with.

We offer a full spectrum of services from risk management to engineering design. We’ll offer advice for simple, cost effective methods to improve resiliency and protection when explicit hardening is not required. If full blast-mitigating design is required, we’ll offer solutions for that, too.

Hinman's work within the Hospitality industry includes multiple five-star hotels, museums, and cultural centers located in high-risk environments throughout the Middle-East, specifically Doha, Qatar, Amman, Jordan and Iraq. Our involvement in projects has ranged from early-planning and criteria development to design and construction of blast mitigation strategies for new and existing buildings.

Banks & Finance

Organizations and institutions responsible for regulating and facilitating capital flows are more concerned than ever about their vulnerability to terrorist attacks. Hinman performs vulnerability assessments and upgrade designs, as well as new facility designs for financial organizations. Our clients include: the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve Bank, and several private banking corporations.

Whether we are working with a predefined set of criteria or with security personnel in defining threats, assets, and vulnerabilities, our efforts focus on developing a comprehensive mitigation strategy that meets both security and budgetary requirements.

Science & Technology

Science and technology facilities, depending on their particular functions, have the potential to be targeted by protest groups and terrorist organizations, making their  protection needs unique.

Hi-tech manufacturing facilities are often located in developing countries where terrorist activity is prolific and unstable. Critical to the manufacturing supply chain,  facility breaches and resulting business interruptions would cause significant monetary losses.

With the rise of centralized cloud computing and large globally-located data centers, our personal and national data vulnerabilities have increased.

Hinman evaluates threats and consequences on people and assets across scenarios, then offers comprehensive advice and/or solutions to mitigate targeted threats. Hinman science and technology sector services include laboratory, hi-tech facility and organization protective design engineering.

Recreational facilities, such as stadiums, cinemas, retail and convention centers, often house volumes of people in a single area. While the perceived risk is often low, a catastrophic event would reap mass casualties. Knowing this but, considering the human component, these facilities can be difficult to protect.

Hinman provides best practice advice, as well as full engineering services to mitigate recreational facilities’ terrorist attack consequences and other hazards.

High-rise buildings and iconic structures make high-profile targets for terrorists and have the potential for mass casualties, damages and business disruption. Early integration of anti-terrorism considerations should be integrated to minimize their impact on building aesthetics and primary functions.

Hinman works closely with design teams to identify threats and, where necessary, provide structural air-blast mitigating designs. Our team will consult with clients to ensure design goals are balanced with security needs and costs.

As clients consider the all-important progressive collapse aptitude for high-rise structures, Hinman will determine economic floor plans and structural systems to provide the most robust designs. Using advanced finite element codes such as LS-DYNA, Hinman runs your design through damage scenarios to provide structural design recommendations that will reduce your risk of collapsed structures.

Product Development

With our vast industry experience, we are poised to offer advice and help develop strong and reliable market-relevant blast products. After working with Hinman, clients will be sure their product is needed and meets protective design requirements.

The first step in any new technology development process is to identify appropriate markets, buyers and market sizes. Because of our extensive experience as designers and consultants in the protective design field, we are ideally suited to understand and make recommendations regarding marketplace and industry needs.

Once identified, we will develop validation programs to support your products. Often this involves analytical and physical modeling, as well as developing simplified design tools or software to predict various configuration behaviors.

If explicit physical testing is required, we coordinate complete custom testing programs  which could include:

  • developing and overseeing test programs,
  • advising on appropriate facilities,
  • developing finite element (FE) models to reduce the number of physical tests required,
  • interpreting physical test results, calibrating FE models to physical results, and
  • developing simplified software tools to predict the performance of the product over a range of applications.
