King Khaled International Airport, Terminal 5
King Khaled International Airport is located in northern Riyadh. The General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia approved plans to expand and develop the Terminal 5 facility. The new terminal expansion is approximately 4,305,564-sf and incorporates the new terminal building, and a number of covered car parks including, public car parking, car rentals and staff parking – all positioned within walking distance from the terminal curbside road and terminal entrances. The terminal building is situated on the largest available area.
Hinman was contracted by Happold Safe & Secure to assist and provide a blast vulnerability assessment of the current design for the Terminal 5 facility.
Hinman provided the blast vulnerability assessment to evaluate the capacity of structural and façade elements of the Terminal 5 facility in response to air-blast loading effects.
Hinman, in collaboration with Happold Safe & Secure, provided the blast vulnerability assessment to evaluate the capacity of structural and façade elements of the Terminal 5 facility in response to air-blast loading effects. We evaluated the blast performance of the current building design under the identified design threats and provided design recommendations for incorporation into the project documents for improved blast performance.
Our report provided the basis of design, analytical approach, a description of the building and site and identification of critical threat scenarios for the Terminal. It also discussed the means by which the building performance is characterized through description of damage types, injury severity and building protection levels.
